Observation Notes:
This was found on the side of my office building in downtown Des Moines, Iowa in a historic neighborhood called the East Village. There are a few trees in the area, but mostly it is an area characterized by pavement. The sighting followed a derecho storm that travelled through the Midwest and hit Iowa with winds up to 120 mph. Most of our city and others around the state lost electricity due to downed trees and lines. This caterpillar, seemed out of place climbing a brick wall but may have blown in from an area tree. I have two photos as well as a video of it climbing the wall.

Sighting Record 1261809

Observation Notes:
This moth landed on the screen of our front window around 6 am and is still there as I write this, around noon. We have made an effort not to disturb it, but it is within three feet of our door. Our first-floor apartment, which is a hundred-year-old mishmash of blue-gray aluminum siding, exposed natural rock, and bits of brick all over, opens directly onto the main street/state highway that runs through our little town. The ancient storefronts that line this main thoroughfare are mostly side-by-side, though we have an empty corner lot/yard that adjoins our property. The lot has mostly walnut trees. Our apartment is also located a couple doors down from the tourist attraction of Captain James T. Kirk's Future Birthplace. It seems odd that it chose such a conspicuous, high-traffic place to stay in broad daylight, but we are glad it did--what a fantastic sighting! Today, it is nice, but a bit overcast. No rain, about 77°F.
