Description of Xyloryctidae
The Xyloryctidae are often considered to be a subfamily (Xyloryctinae) of Oecophoridae, but Hodges (1999) raised them to family status. The Xyloryctid Moths are similar to the Oecophoridae except that they have transverse bands of spines on the abdominal tergites. Xyloryctidae are mostly represented in Australia, with about 400 species, but are also found in other southern areas like South America and southern Africa. Most species feed on wood as larvae.
