Proserpinus juanita (Strecker, 1877)
Family: Sphingidae
Subfamily: Macroglossinae
Identification: Forewing upperside is pale gray-green with a deep green-brown median area and a white dash at the wing tip; underside is pale orange at the base. Hindwing upperside is bright orange-red with a black border; underside is green to olive green.
Wing Span: 1 3/4 - 2 1/2 inches (4.5 - 6.4 cm).
Life History: Adults sometimes rest inside deep-throated flowers.
Flight: . Two broods from April-August.
Caterpillar Hosts: Plants in the evening primrose family (Onagraceae) including evening primrose (Oenothera), gaura (Gaura), and willow weed (Epilobium)
Adult Food: Nectar from a variety of flowers including dame\'s-rocket and a white-flowered thistle.
Habitat: Forest edges, prairie valleys and hills, and weedy roadsides.
Range: North Dakota south to Arizona, east to Missouri and Texas.
Conservation: Not usually required.
NCGR: G4 - Apparently secure globally, though it might be quite rare in parts of its range, especially at the periphery.
