European Yellow Underwing
Noctua pronuba (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Noctuidae
Subfamily: Noctuinae
Identification: Yellow hindwing and black marginal band. Lacks dark discal spot present in Noctua comes. Forewing color and pattern is variable, ranging from immaculate to well marked.
Wing Span: 2.1-2.6 cm.
Life History: Adults are nocturnal.
Flight: Mid-June to late September.
Caterpillar Hosts: Weedy and cultivated herbaceous plants including FragariaSolanum lyopersicon var. cerasiforme (Solanaceae), Beta (Chenopodiaceae), and Vitis (Vitaceae).
Adult Food:
Habitat: Lawns, open areas with sparse weedy growth.
Range: Native range is Eurasia and Africa. Accidentally introduced to Nova Scota in 1979 and has spread across the continent to Alaska, California, and British Columbia.
