Identification: Forewing very long and narrow. Orbicular spot large, elongate, white-filled, separated from brown-filled reniform spot by black shade. Hindwing shiny, light to dark gray. Melanic specimens common.
Wing Span: 3.9-5.1 cm.
Life History:
Flight: May-August.
Caterpillar Hosts: Beech, maples, white elm, and other broadleaved trees.
Adult Food:
Habitat: Nova Scotia to North Carolina, west to southeastern Manitoba and northern Arkansas.
