Orbed Narrow-wing
Magusa divaricata (Walker, 1857)

Identification: Note the unusually long, narrow forewing, which is blackish brown with inconspicuous lines. Some have broad white border along inner margin. Rounded white apical patch ("orb") not always present, but outline of "orb" visible even in dark form. Hindwing blackish with white fringe.
Wing Span: 3.2-4.5 cm.
Life History:
Flight: August-November northward; all year in extreme south Florida and Texas.
Caterpillar Hosts: Black ironweed and coyotilla (Karwinskia humboldtiana).

Habitat:
Range: Tropical; regularly occurs from Florida to Texas in southeastern United States, and strays north to Maine, southern Ontario, and Wisconsin.

Taxonomy Notes: This species was formerly considered Magusa orbifera, but M. orbifera is a separate species found only in far South Florida through the Keys and Caribbean Islands.
