Catocala ilia Cramer, 1780
Family: Erebidae
Subfamily: Erebinae
Identification: Forewing extremely variable, may be mottled dark gray to almost black. Usually some whitish in median area. Reniform spot usually outlined with white or solid white (form "conspicua" Worthington). Note reddish orange median band with deep scallops near anal angle of hindwing. Fringe pale orangish, narrow except at apex.
Wing Span: 6.5-8.2 cm.
Life History:
Flight: June-September.
Caterpillar Hosts: Oaks, including black, burr, red, and white oaks.

Range: Newfoundland and Quebec to Florida, and west.
