Yellow-headed Cutworm Moth
Apamea amputatrix (Fitch, 1857)
Family: Noctuidae
Subfamily: Noctuinae
Identification: Median area of forewing deep crimson. Basal and st. areas greenish to whitish gray and warm brown. Note the 2 white dots at lower end of reniform spot. Hindwing yellowish, grayish brown at margin. Melanic specimens are deep iridescent chocolate brown.
Wing Span: 4.4-5 cm.
Life History: Larva (Yellow-headed Cutworm) damages many crops.
Flight: June-August.
Caterpillar Hosts: Cabbage, corn, currants, grasses, lettuce, roses, wheat, and young trees (often fruit trees).
