One-eyed sphinx
Smerinthus cerisyi

Observation date: June 21, 2014
Submitted by: Jon Spruce
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This is at Maidstone Lake in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. I would guess the Walnut Sphinx Moth but this seems to be beyond its range, plus I don't see any of its corresponding trees, minus alders. The two "eyes" on its inner wings only flashed when I provoked it to move. It stayed in one place from the afternoon until well into the evening.
