One-eyed sphinx
Smerinthus cerisyi

Observation date: June 12, 2013
Submitted by: rabbitlover
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Had one red dot on each wing at one point, otherwise simply different shades of brown. Was outside on a door when found, placed in a bug terranium soon after first photo. After it was placed in cage, orange eggs were found underneath where moth had been. Not sure if eggs are good or bad for this breed. Holding container has plants and will safely contain the moth. When not flying, wings measure about 6cm across.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: This is a native moth, one of no economic or pestiferous concerns. No worries about eggs. If you want to try raising some, they are easy to rear and feed on willow. Make sure you provide ~3 inches of soil at the end of the season; they pupate within the soil.
