Catocala palaeogama

Observation notes: Noticed this caterpillar on my front hood while driving home from Suffolk county, NY. It seemed to be approximately two inches long. At home I used a paper to remove it from the hood and it began to thrash around, almost jumping, and curled a small bit. Once on the grass it stopped thrashing. I'm curious as to what it is. Any help would be appreciated, thank you :)

Coordinator notes: Very nice find. It turns out that in this genus, head capsule pattern is diagnostic to species; however, in general you should photo caterpillars in profile rather than from above. This is species is fairly common as an adult on Long Island. Thanks for submitting to BAMONA.
