One-eyed sphinx
Smerinthus cerisyi

Observation date: August 28, 2012
Submitted by: junebell
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Caterpillar was moving at fast clip across an asphalt path in a local park. When it reached an unpaved area covered with bark chips, it began methodically burrowing under the chips. It was about three inches long and had a distinctive blue "crested" tail. I've never seen anything like it before and wondered what it is.
