Deceptive Sallow
Feralia deceptiva

Observation date: June 25, 2012
Submitted by: Sallerpillar
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found crawling on my husband's jacket as he sat on an upstairs deck (roofed but not screened) under Oregon oak and Douglas fir trees (with Oregen ash trees nearby) in Beaverton, Oregon. A cloudy day, low 60's F. The caterpillar appeared to chew on young fir needles when kept in a jar, but afterwards the needles showed no obvious signs of damage. It does eat new-growth blue spruce needles, but will also eat new-growth Douglas fir if no spruce is available. Has not eaten other leaves I have offered (clover, cherry, ash, lupine, oak).
