Carolina sphinx
Manduca sexta

Observation date: August 16, 2011
Submitted by: Jerry
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I had trimmed some branches from a Korean Lilac bush and was gathering them up to dispose of them when I spotted this moth. The wingspan was approximately 5" and the body lentgh was 3-4". The colorings matched the branches perfectly. The moth spread its' wings at first, then seemed to "play dead". It then closed its' wings and stayed very still on the branch. It was dusk and the weather was mild and pleasant, approximately 75F.
