Large Marble
Euchloe ausonides

Observation date: June 15, 2011
Submitted by: cabngirl
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sighted in my garden in Sonoma, CA. Nice June afternoon in the upper 80's, light breeze. Plant is Brazilian Vervain/verbena bonariensis. It spent a good deal of time on the one flower cluster (which is in part shade)- long enough for me to run for my camera, swap the memory card from my computer and get back out and capture it. Unfortunately I was still 20 or so feet from it and it flew off so the photo is not the highest quality. Still, I was surprised when I looked at the enlargement and found it was a marble.

Coordinator notes: The determination is made on description of the locality and habitat as much as the field marks, which could fit Euchloe hyantis also based on the FW marks above. Lower side and wing shape, marbling below favor ausonides. These two are very difficult to ID from photographs, but usually easy in hand based on size differences and the usual darker green marbling (less yellow) in hyantis.
