Observation notes: Seen while walking on Stone Creek Road (a designated hiking trail near the Custer Gallatin National Forest, about 15 miles northeast of Bozeman, off of Montana Route 86.
It was a sunny day, low wind, in 50s (fahrenheit). Trail is dirt and rock, and some of the dirt areas were damp and slightly muddy from recent rains. Photos submitted show the two butterflies on mud in the road.
Saw a number of these blue butterflies on parts of the road/trail; when I took this photo there were probably 8-10 in the area.
