Western White
Pontia occidentalis

Observation date: March 21, 2026
Submitted by: sgguthart
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sunny, low 70's, breezy. This butterfly was seen flying from one Hookers Townsend's Daisy to another. A large number of these Daisies are growing in the gravel along a gravel road. I would say this is the 'flower of choice' for the three different species of butterflies I've seen on these flowers; however, it's about the only plant in bloom in this area at this time. I have seen a few, very few, Claytonia rosea, Rocky Mountain Spring Beauty, plants blooming not far from here, but they are growing in areas of dead, thick brush.

Coordinator notes: Your ID is correct...looks like a female...spring form calyce with the nicely veined hindwings...beautiful! Take care, Mike
