Spicebush Swallowtail
Papilio troilus

Observation date: August 22, 2025
Submitted by: cp2023
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Comparing dark female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Spicebush and the Pipevine Swallowtails, I'm leaning toward Spicebush due to the speckled body and the likelihood of occurrence here vs Pipevine. Hard to tell with it partially blocked by the leaf.

Coordinator notes: Hi. I've never seen the dark Eastern Tiger Swallowtail female in Connecticut; they seem only to occur further south. In Texas, for example, the melanistic females are by far the most common; light forms are extremely rare. Pipevine Swallowtails do occur in New England, but while they're common further south, I've never seen one in CT. JRains
