Submitted by: Zencoyote
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Easily the most common large butterfly seen. Anywhere there were oaks, this species was a presence. Began seeing them patrolling a meter or higher on the South Grade Rd for Palomar Mtn at about 3000 ft and all the way up to the ridge top, into the state park and hundreds in and around Doane Pond inside the park boundary. Temperatures ranged from 75 to 85 degrees, solid breeze, and clear skies. At Doane, individuals hovered near to ground, landing on the damp soil surface or on foliage close by.
