Observation date: September 27, 2016
Date notes: date and time derived from image files; probably the same butterfly was also observed on 9/26

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Monarch butterfly observed perched on aspen leaves and feeding on rabbitbrush. We usually see a few butterflies in late summer/fall. I once found a chrysalis attached to a morning glory vine near where some Asclepias subverticillata was planted, and once observed a newly emerged butterfly with a deformed wing. Asclepias speciosa grows wild along old irrigation ditches and roadsides in the area and rabbitbrush is common (flowering in the fall).

Coordinator notes: Yes, the Monarch...newly emerged female. Hope she made the trip south for the winter OK...ones from here will never return here again but could as the offspring brood that grew up in northern Mexico-southern Texas or New Mexico. Mike
