Northern Crescent
Phyciodes cocyta

Observation date: July 13, 2023

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found in a location where I've seen and confirmed male P. tharos with complete black antenna clubs. Very large individual (Checkerspot size...in fact I was taken back initially thinking it was a Silvery Checkerspot). Clubs appear completely orange on the underside. The ventral HW highlights do appear a little darker than I would expect with P. cocyta, along with a more obvious crescent. I realize females can be extremely difficult to ID, however this individual was seen around many males with orange tips and more open orange dorsal HWs. Unfortunately, I couldn't get decent posterior views of the male clubs, and this individual flew away before I could get any dorsal views.
