Black Swallowtail
Papilio polyxenes

Observation date: March 24, 2023
Submitted by: Seth Mueller
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Looks very similar to the anise swallowtail.
Status: Resident
Verified by: Ken Davenport
Verified date: April 17, 2023
Coordinator notes: Tough call, but the ocellate shape of the forewing median band and more rounded forewing yellow spots are typical of rudkini. One problem here is the abdomen, I can't see enough to be sure....zelicaon has a wider yellow stripe while rudkini's is more narrow with "polyxenes" spots often visible on the abdomen.. If I am wrong, we know both species occur together at the deserts edge-Ken Davenport
