Gray Buckeye
Junonia grisea

Observation date: November 18, 2022
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Individual buckeye, small in size as has been noted this fall season, perching on cottonwood leaves and mast to warm and to avoid cool wind gusts. A few buckeyes remain along the Rio Grande, laying low in Bermuda grass, Johnson-grass, on leaf/mast mats, and along the leeward side of riparian shrubs. Daytime temperature is in the middle 50s while nighttime temperature is in the high 20s, typically with a breeze or light, gusting wind. The afternoon was sunny, cool, and with wind gusts.
Status: Resident
