Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: August 18, 2022
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I'd always associated this species as one of the first to come out in early spring (I remember that was the case in MN), but in reading the notes I guess this is a newly emerged one from an egg that was laid in early spring? There were quite a few flying around this area.

Coordinator notes: You are correct...the spring flying Morning Cloaks (from hibernation the previous fall) lay eggs and produce a late summer-early fall flight. These are the individuals that will again hibernate over the winter and you'll see again next spring. Mike
