Rocky Mountain Parnassian
Parnassius smintheus

Observation date: July 03, 2022
Submitted by: tjay13
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Again, guidebook looks like Phoebus - however Smintheus not even listed while index refers back to Phoebus. Another taxanomic split possibly? Not great angles for photos as this one was across the rocky, brushy creek limiting my ability to chase give the short perch time(s)

Coordinator notes: yes, field guides only 5 years old call it phoebus, but the experts are now calling this smintheus. your photo shows the butterfly on a larval host - king's crown. I appreciate you documenting both in the Lake Peak/Baldy area because it has been scarce in recent (dry) years.
