Cecropia silkmoth
Hyalophora cecropia

Observation date: June 20, 2022
Submitted by: Toni Bonk
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: We saw this moth while in its caterpillar form munching on our cherry laurel bush in the summer/fall of 2021. We knew it had formed a cocoon in the plant and kept the bush protected and marked where we knew it was overwintering. We kept an eye on the bush after we learned it would emerge in May/June. We were walking around the backyard and saw it hanging on the outer leaves of the laurel bush, which is in direct sun. It was a warm sunny day (80F). It would move its wings ever so slightly every now and then. The moth stayed in the same place until sometime after dusk and when we went to check around 9pm it was gone.
