California Sister
Adelpha californica

Observation date: May 24, 2022

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This was my best observation of this species in the 5 years I have been observing in northern San Diego County. The individual was patrolling what looked like a small tree-sized Rhus of some sort and I had about 90 seconds of fair/good observation before it moved on. Its movement in the air resembled that of a Monarch, but broken up with brief staccato wing beats. Landed a few times, settling open-winged on the branches, so I could see its left side had suffered some damage. The area was a relatively moist ravine bottom and there were other more common butterfly species in the area. Partly cloudy and cool for May.
