Black Swallowtail
Papilio polyxenes

Observation date: May 15, 2022
Submitted by: Joshua C
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This gorgeous butterfly was flying around the hilltop where I was on the south canyon wall. It would often alight for minutes at a time on Apache plume but I never saw it nectaring.
Status: Resident
Verified by: stevecary
Verified date: May 17, 2022
Coordinator notes: hilltopping is a mate-location activity that requires concentration; nectaring can wait. You also might find Anisa and Old World swallowtails at that location, so thanks for getting a nice spread of shots that reveal upperside, underside and abdomen, which collectively leave no doubt this is Black Swallowtail.
Checklist region(s): United States, New Mexico, Bernalillo County
