Coordinator notes: Thanks for contributing! The Appalachian Azure is only known to occur in the rich cove forests on shady moist hillsides in the mountains of extreme northeastern Alabama (specifically at the Walls of Jericho). They tend to not stray far from this habitat and their host plant. Unfortunately this location and habitat would not support a population of Appalachian Azures, so this individual should be a Summer Azure; the two species are very similar and best identified by host, habitat/range, and size if noted in the field. The bright white ventral ground color, relatively small, crisp, bold black spots, and apparently uncheckered hindwing fringe should rule out Spring Azure.
