Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: February 05, 2022
Submitted by: bonfrey
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Butterfly was found inside some loose bark in a pile of pine wood. We assumed butterfly was dead, but while I was handling the tips of the wings to open it, it flicked its wings once quickly. Advice about what to do with the butterfly would be appreciated. For now it's in a shed.

Coordinator notes: you found a hibernating mourning cloak. it will want to become active again as weather warms, so it should be outdoors, not in an enclosed space. I suggest finding another scrap of loose bark, a clump of dead leaves, a brush pile.
