Observation notes: It must have been a great year for European skippers in the UP. I saw them everywhere I went, but nowhere were they more abundant than in the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. It seemed there was at least one individual on every blossom in the refuge, and many were completely covered. The numbers must have been in the tens of thousands of individuals. When I walked through one milkweed patch, they flew up in a great encompassing cloud, like a huge flock of birds. Only occasionally were there other skippers, such as long dash or Peck's skipper, nectaring with them.
