Indra Swallowtail
Papilio indra

Observation date: August 08, 2021
Submitted by: twofried
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: All dark abdomen except for yellow spot at the end. Clearly defined iridescent blue band. Postmedian yellow spots on dorsal hindwing fade to nothing. Really out of range butterfly. Perhaps blown in with strong west winds yesterday. Very actively nectaring at milkweed along road next to cliff.

Coordinator notes: This is tremendous, Bob! all the marks are there; even the long tails turn out to be typical for Four Corners populations. Great catch. great diagnosis! a first for Taos County. the second concrete record for NM, and this establishes a new southeast outpost for this species.
Checklist region(s): United States, New Mexico, Taos County
