Rocky Mountain Parnassian
Parnassius smintheus

Observation date: July 20, 2020
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: There were numerous of the typical white Rocky Mountain Parniassians in the alpine meadows on this morning, but this darker morph/variant was also present and I saw one other darker one. I didn't find any other species that resembled it and the spots were like the r.m. Parnassian so is it just a dark version?

Coordinator notes: Your suggested ID is correct....this is a female and generally at high altitude, females are dark - often blackish - this one a little bit more so perhaps than average, the wings very transparent (subspecies pseudorotgeri). The obviously white ones are mostly males but you do find a whiter-scaled female as well. (I'll pick-up your other sightings tomorrow....) Mike
