Spotted Apatelodes Moth
Apatelodes torrefacta

Observation date: September 05, 2020
Submitted by: conleybirds
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found on the underside of a calycanthus floridus leave. Interestingly, this is the 2nd moth caterpillar I've spotted on this shrub although not host plants to them. This was a hot, breezy, sunny day. When it started walking in search of a new leaf, I noticed the foot pads are red. There are 3 "spikes" along the top of the body. It could move remarkably fast. The gardens are filled with native trees, shrubs. grasses & perennials. Reading about this particular species, I don't know that its host plant exists here (?).
