Mormon Fritillary
Speyeria mormonia

Observation date: July 10, 2020
Submitted by: Harry Forbes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Please note that Greater Fritillaries have always given me trouble due to the variable coloration by area and the simple fact that they are confusing to me period. Apologize for only a partial shot of upper side. The marginal spots on the upper forewing appear to be rather uniform, which is one characteristic of Mormon. The tannish underside silvered spots appear to have a greenish- colored extension, which can also be characteristic of Mormon. Plus, I'd call the size small for a Greater Frit.

Coordinator notes: all of what you noted is correct and typical for Mormon Frit, while atypical for other frit species in our area. it also is our highest elevation 'greater' fritillary. it is pretty distinct among the great frits that occupy New Mexico. an easy one :^)
