Observation notes: Very hot and humid morning. The Zebra longwing are Florida's state butterfly, which is ironic because they prefer shade when looking for host plants. In the past few months I have seen more Zebra longwing in my backyard. I had transplanted a few passionvine into a shady area beneath my cedar tree so I hope the zebras will lay eggs here, too. This Zebra is nectoring in a cooler shady area beneath my golden dew drop, a member of the Verbena family which can provide pollen that the Zebra longwing eats, in addition to making such lovely flowers. The plant is a favorite of many butterflies that visit my yard.
