Observation notes: We were delighted to see this Mourning Cloak visiting our oriole feeder and eating the jelly on top of it. It kept its wings folded and just stayed there as I took this flash photo.
My husband saw the same species at 7:00 a.m. this morning and I took this photo 3.5 hours later so we're wondering if it is the same butterfly. Beautiful spring day: blue skies, light winds, 90 degrees in sun but feeder is in the shade. I reviewed the caterpillar host plants and saw that hackberry was listed. We have a netleaf hackberry (Celtis reticulata) very close to the feeder.
