California Sister
Adelpha californica

Observation date: March 25, 2020
Submitted by: Zencoyote
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Seen flying in and around the Live Oak trees lining some of Carlsbad’s residential throughways. At first I thought it might be a Lorquin’s Admiral, and it took some examination of the imagery to settle on an ID. I usually see Admirals around Sycamore, so I had some suspicions. The black edges around the outer fore wings was the deciding feature. Even though the picture is poor quality, this feature is clear. It tended to fly higher as well, up around the tree boughs, with occasional forays to near ground level.
