Observation notes: On the morning of this day, I saw that the chrysalis I had been watching in my yard since September 7th had turned black, and feared that it had frozen and died. I went out for a few hours, and when I returned, the chrysalis was just a clear empty shell. This butterfly was hanging upside down from a leaf below it. I watched it for a couple of hours as it rested, opening and closing its wings and slowly moving among the leaves.
