Orange-barred Sulphur
Phoebis philea

Observation date: August 18, 2016
Submitted by: TCollins
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This was the month of an invasion of south Texas specialties' into our Ranch Native Plant Garden.. Great Southern White, Soldier, Laviana White-Skipper, Dorante's Longtail, White-striped Longtail, Long-tailed Skipper, 0Coyote Cloudywing and possible TRopical Buckeye (Still being studied), I caught this Sulphur out of the corner of my eye and when I got a good look at it as it was flying I clearly saw the "orange bars" on the leading edge of the dorsal forewings. It stopped briefly to nectar on a Yellow-Bells shrub on the side of the ranch house gardens and I got this picture. You can see some orange washing through on the ventral hindwing lower edges. This was a lifer for me as I've never seen one in the Rio Grande Valley butterfly gardens.
