Sleepy Orange
Abaeis nicippe

Observation date: August 01, 2019

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Was excited to see this butterfly as I've never seen this kind before. Was seen in the grasses at Baker Wetlands right near the boardwalk where heavy rainfall yesterday and part of this morning flooded the ponds and swamps, the water now being up to the boardwalks, about 2' below the one I was on. In flight, the dorsal view was bright orange with very definite heavy black borders. It let me get a little close, but not too close. When I got too close, it would fly about 3' away and land again, repeat. Size: Approx. 1.75 - 2" wingspan. Weather: 78 degrees, 94% humidity, overcast skies.
