Observation notes: Beautiful, large black moth seen in my apartment building stairwell, as I was leaving to go out. Moth was ensnared in a spiderweb. I was able to free him from the spiderweb, where he jumped out of my hand, and landed on the cement landing, for this photograph. It took some time but I was eventually able to get him down 19 stairs, where he promptly jumped into another corner, full of spiderwebs! With encouragement, and gentle prodding from me, I was thrilled to see him fly into a nearby sapling, approximately 50 feet away. He looked like a very fresh specimen. Photo is somewhat blurry , as my hands were full. I had been very active in birding, natural history, and butterfly/moth classes, and 4th of July Butterfly Counts, for 11 years, while living in DC, through the Audubon Naturalist Society. I have never seen this particular species of moth, before. Temperature was 86 degrees, and it was extremely hot and humid.
