Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: May 03, 2019
Submitted by: ghighcove
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Taken in garden on 10th floor of parking structure at 777 S. Alameda St., Los Angeles 90021 adjacent to large complex of produce (fruit and vegetables) warehouse in downtown Los Angeles at Central and Alameda St. This area has daily mass loading and unloading of produce into tractor trailers, and may have attracted this butterfly because of the rotten fruit in dumpsters near this location. Additionally, the flowers at the garden often attract butterflies, moths, and honeybees, as well as ladybugs.
