Observation notes: Was on ground - lethargic - the early afternoon had been warm and this butterfly seemed as though it wasn't really certain about it's flying. There is mustard plants nearby and this butterfly had possibly recently emerged with our short warm period earlier in the day. The wind had picked up in the afternoon. Picked up the butterfly carefully and was considering whether to keep it overnight in a container with a stick when it made a dash - flying was not quite mastered yet and after much random/unstable flight it landed high up on a California Buckeye Tree and that's where it remained. Note: we've had cool weather for a while and have just started getting days off and on that are hitting near 70. We have noticed emergence of other butterflies during this time such as Mourning Cloaks, Tortoiseshells, and Cabbage Whites.
