Observation notes: Time: ~1:00 p.m. Sky: Sunny. Temperature: 90 degrees. Humidity: 64%. Wind Speed: 12 mph. Notes: These tiny, golden grass skippers were quite common in both Cross Plains and Sun Prairie. These two were captured (and later released) as they slowly hovered along near the ground at the base of a small hill. Vegetation in the area included common milkweed, crownvetch, red clover, and tall grass. Other butterflies in the area included silver-spotted skippers, cabbage whites, clouded sulphurs, monarchs, and tawny emperors. In Sun Prairie, there is a field of grass (up to 5+ feet tall) behind my hotel, and this field is swarming with these skippers. I included a couple pictures of this grass, including one blade that looks like it has possible caterpillar feeding damage (circled in white), because I suspect it may be their local host plant.
