Cecropia silkmoth
Hyalophora cecropia

Observation date: May 26, 2018
Submitted by: epayne73
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This is my first real observation of any type of moth. I noticed, while watching it, it was making a convulsive movement with its abdomen. I needed to move it from the bottom part of a tree (where I was mowing my lawn) to higher up the trunk. While attempting to move a stick underneath it, the moth excreted a thin strand from the tip of its abdomen. Again, being a pure novice, my guess is this was silk, but I don't know.
Status: Resident

Verified date: May 27, 2018
Coordinator notes: The strand was excess fluid they normally release shortly after eclosing. He is quite fresh, and in good health.
