Painted Tiger Moth
Arachnis picta

Observation date: May 10, 2018
Submitted by: Portalsopennowgo
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sunny, fairly warm; the insect didn’t move much and was on a wall that was (from my memory) shadowed (the sun was not illuminating the wall). There were roughly five students around the moth taking pictures, it eventually closed its wings, hiding the colorful red. (Mosquitos share a similar behavior in relation to this wall)
Status: Resident
Verified by: A_baldini
Verified date: May 19, 2018
Coordinator notes: Certainly a Painted Tiger Moth, as no other Arachnis species are found in eastern Colorado (most of them are restricted to Arizona & New Mexico down through Central America). I sure hope none of the students hurt this beautiful insect!
Checklist region(s): Boulder County, United States, Colorado
