Painted Tiger Moth
Arachnis picta

Observation date: September 29, 2017
Submitted by: Kayla.Echols13
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I originally observed the moth on a stone flower-garden retaining wall, but I couldn't stop and take photos right then, so I returned about an hour later and scooped it up in a cup to take home and photograph. Only then did I realize it was dead. The body was still in great shape, though, so I think it must have only been dead for a very short time. The weather was clear but moderately chilly, perhaps 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, I have more photos than the ones I've attached, but they show pretty much the same views of the moth. I couldn't figure out how to get a photo of it because the wings were in the way, but I could see that the topside of the moth's abdomen was bright red. It was about 1 inch long.
