Behr's Metalmark
Apodemia virgulti

Observation date: March 22, 2015
Submitted by: RichHubie
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: One of the few butterfly pictures taken in Kern County. I identified this only as a Mormon Metalmark at the time. Based on what I know now, with the early date of sighting, it is the virgulti subspecies and possibly a Davenport's Metalmark.
Status: Resident
Verified by: Ken Davenport
Verified date: July 24, 2016
Coordinator notes: Yes, it is the subspecies davenporti, and those were named after me. We have several butterflies in the Mormon Metalmark complex in Kern County and three of those occur in the Wofford Heights area (an undescribed virgulti that is double brooded-davenporti is single brooded in the spring and Apodemia mormo cythera). The undescribed entity is usually blackish like mojavelimbus but some are more orange-Ken Davenport
Checklist region(s): United States, California, Kern County
