Observation notes: NOTE, I (Joseph Miller) am submitting this record for Anthony Miller, so this is not my personal sighting. Anthony showed me photos of a butterfly which he could not identify, I immediately recognized it as a Sickle-winged Skipper (or Northern Sicklewing). He was kind enough to share the photos with me so that I could post them here. This species is very distinctive and can't really be confused with any other species that I know of. The butterfly was nectaring on flowering carrots in a rural garden, where he also reported a Mexican Yellow in the same area as well (also somewhat unusual for the area), so maybe we are having minor southern invasion. I could only find two former records for Kansas, both from this website. Now if it will just hang around a few more days...
